Macomb County Jail Overview

Macomb County Jail is operated by the Macomb County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Anthony M. Wickersham, at the sheriff's complex in Mt. Clemens. It is the local jail for Macomb County arrests, including arrests by sheriff's deputies and municipal police agencies that book people into county custody. The jail is not a state prison. It holds people who are newly booked, waiting for arraignment, waiting for bond or release processing, serving local jail sentences, held on warrants or detainers, or awaiting transfer to another authority.

The public service pages for the jail are split across several official county pages rather than one single manual. The county has a Locate an inmate page for the official JailTracker/Public Safety Cloud roster, a jail services hub, separate pages for bond, mail, inmate services, visitation, and a Sheriff's Records Office page. That layout matters because a family member may need more than the roster: the inmate number for mail, the bond amount and case numbers for release, the video visit scheduler, or a records request when the online roster is not enough.

The county is also rebuilding the jail campus through the Central Intake and Assessment Center project. County releases describe the CIAC as a modern intake, assessment, medical, mental-health, detox, court intake, pretrial, and housing project. It is intended to replace aging jail areas and change the front end of the custody process from simple holding space toward centralized screening, assessment, and treatment when appropriate.

The county's official sheriff location page shows the jail and Sheriff's Office at 43565 Elizabeth Road in Mt. Clemens, with the main public phone number 586-469-5151. The county jail is close to the Mount Clemens court and county-government corridor, so bond, court, and records errands may involve more than one county office even when the custody location is the jail.

The county's inmate-locator landing page is the starting point for the roster and includes the sheriff's scam warning before users move to JailTracker. The screenshot below comes from the official Macomb County Locate an inmate page.

Use that county page as the handoff point to the roster, then return to the jail services and records pages when you need bond, mail, visitation, or proof-of-incarceration details.

Macomb County Jail Capacity and Population

Macomb County's current daily jail population was not located in the official text sources reviewed for this build, so this page does not estimate an average daily population or incarceration rate. The best sourced jail capacity figure in the research is tied to the CIAC project. The county's July 19, 2024 groundbreaking release says the project will add 278 cell beds and bring the total to 1,178 beds when complete, with completion expected in mid-2027. Search snippets from older official annual reports show a rated design capacity of 1,242 in 2018 and 1,201 in 2019, while a 2024 annual-report snippet refers to expanded capacity of 1,188 inmates. Because the direct county CIAC release is cleaner for the new project, the table below uses the 1,178-bed figure and treats current daily population as not located.

1,178 CIAC Total Beds After Project
Not Located Current Daily Jail Population

Historical official snippets provide useful scale. The 2018 Sheriff's Office annual-report snippet listed 16,769 bookings, including 12,657 males and 4,112 females, with 39 percent felony charges, 46 percent misdemeanor charges, and 15 percent non-public or miscellaneous matters. A 2019 snippet listed 16,407 new prisoners. Those figures describe annual intake volume, not a current head count on any given day.

How to Look Up an Inmate at Macomb County Jail

The correct online path for current county-jail custody is the official Macomb County Locate an inmate page, which links to the JailTracker/Public Safety Cloud roster for Macomb_Co_MI. The county page says to use JailTracker to look up an inmate and warns that the Sheriff's Office will not call demanding fees, gift cards, bitcoin, or other payment by phone. If a caller claims to be collecting money for the jail, verify directly with 586-469-5151 before paying anything.

  1. Open the county Locate an inmate page and read the scam warning before following the official roster link.
  2. Open the JailTracker/Public Safety Cloud locator and search using the name or number fields shown by the live roster.
  3. Confirm the person is listed for Macomb County Jail custody, not a state prison, federal prison, or old court case.
  4. Use the profile to collect the inmate number, case numbers, bond or fine amount, and other listed status details before mailing, depositing funds, or posting bond.

The roster did not fully text-render in the research environment, so this page does not claim exact field labels or promise every visible field. County pages confirm that inmate name, inmate number, case numbers for charges, and bond or fine amount are needed for related jail tasks. If the roster is down, incomplete, or no longer lists the person, call the jail at 586-469-5151 or use the Sheriff's Records Office and FOIA path at records.mcso@macombcountymi.gov.

Use the right system for the custody type. Macomb County JailTracker covers people in Macomb County Jail. Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS covers state prisoners, parolees, and probationers under MDOC supervision, and it does not cover county-jail-only inmates. Federal sentenced prisoners are searched through the Bureau of Prisons locator, while ICE custody uses the ICE Online Detainee Locator System. MI-VINE can also be used for custody-status and criminal-case notifications in Michigan.

Booking and Intake at Macomb County Jail

A typical Macomb County jail booking begins after an arrest by the Sheriff's Office or one of the local police agencies that brings the person to county custody. Jail staff identify the arrestee, record the booking, assign an inmate number, secure property, conduct searches and safety checks, collect booking information, arrange phone access, screen for medical and mental-health needs, classify the person for housing, and determine whether bond, court release, transfer, or continued custody applies. The county did not publish a roster refresh rate, so do not assume the online listing updates immediately after arrest or release.

Property release is locally documented. In-custody inmates may release valuable property only during incarceration, such as keys, pagers, cell phones, wallets, and jewelry. Clothing items such as pants, shirts, and shoes are not treated as valuables in the county text. Property release is Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. When an inmate transfers to prison, property is boxed and held for 14 days before disposal if an authorized person does not retrieve it.

About Macomb County Jail

The jail's current public story is tied closely to the Central Intake and Assessment Center. The county's July 19, 2024 release says construction began on a $228 million project with no tax increase and expected completion in mid-2027. The project includes demolition of older jail areas, additional beds, centralized intake and assessment, robust pretrial services, and new medical and mental-health spaces. The county's January 18, 2024 update described a project with a public lobby, secure passage, staff support, intake and release, court intake housing, medical and mental health, community corrections, and general population housing.

The jail also has service and program details that matter for families. County inmate-services materials identify trustee work opportunities, community corrections, medical, dental, and psychological care through Wellpath, correctional education through L'Anse Creuse, substance-abuse treatment through Clinton Counseling, jail ministry, tablet funds, phone service, care packages, and property-release procedures. Those programs do not change the custody lookup path, but they explain why the jail services pages are useful after a person is found on the roster.

The CIAC groundbreaking page documents the jail modernization project and its intake, medical, mental-health, and pretrial-service goals. The screenshot below is from the county's July 19, 2024 CIAC groundbreaking release.

That county release is the clearest source for the 1,178-bed post-project figure used on this page, while older annual-report snippets are treated as historical capacity context.

Note: Confirm custody, visit approval, and release status with the jail before traveling or paying bond.
